A man suffered an accident while doing work around his house which required him to be hospitalized. While he was in the hospital, it was discovered that he had cancer.
The family had limited income and no health insurance. When they contacted the community partner for help to apply for the Oregon Health Plan (OHP), the person already owed about $64,000 in medical bills.
With the community partner’s help, the entire family was approved for coverage, and OHP was able to cover his past hospitalization and his cancer treatment.
Although OHP has been available for a long time, not everyone knows about it or how to apply for it. Thanks to local, trusted community partners who are trained to navigate the process and health systems, people get the help they need to be both financially and physically healthy.
